Fudgy Brown Butter Brownies With Chocolate Chips – The Ultimate Homemade Dessert

If you’re a chocolate lover, these brown butter brownies are going to become your new obsession. Rich, fudgy, and impossibly indulgent, they combine the nutty, caramel-like depth of browned butter, the deep chocolate flavor of Dutch-processed cocoa, and the gooey goodness of folded-in chocolate chips. Add a touch of brown sugar for warmth and chewiness, and you have a brownie that’s equal parts sophisticated and comforting.

These browned butter brownies are my husband’s absolute favorite brownies. He even asked me to make them instead of a groom’s cake for him at our wedding! They will always be a crowd pleaser at the cookout. I had an aunt come up to me and tell me these were the best brownies that she has ever had in her whole life, and she is 78!

What is Brown Butter?

Brown Butter is when you take butter past its melting point and allow the milk solids within the butter to toast. This creates a nutty, caramelized flavor that adds incredible depth and flavor to sweet treats. This will change the color of the butter. The butter will turn to a golden colored liquid that you can see through to the bottom of the pan, where you will see toasted golden bits on the bottom of the pan.

Why Brown Butter?

Browning butter is a simple step that transforms ordinary butter into something magical. The milk solids toast as the butter melts, creating a nutty, almost caramel-like flavor that takes these brownies from everyday to extraordinary. The aroma alone is enough to make anyone impatient for a taste!

Dutch-Processed Cocoa: Deep Chocolate Flavor

Using Dutch-processed cocoa gives these brownies a smooth, mellow chocolate flavor with less acidity than natural cocoa powder. It blends seamlessly with the brown butter, producing a rich, luxurious chocolate base that’s perfect for chocolate chips to shine.

Brown Sugar for Chewy Perfection

Brown sugar adds more than sweetness. Its molasses content helps keep the brownies moist and chewy, creating a perfect balance with the slightly crisp edges. Brown sugar tends to retain moisture, so adding it to your baked goods can help keep them from drying out too quickly when baking.

Chocolate Chips for Extra Indulgence

Folding chocolate chips into the batter ensures every bite has little pockets of melted chocolate, making these browned butter brownies extra decadent. You can choose semi-sweet, dark, or milk chocolate chips depending on your preference.

I always add more than the recipe calls for because I want them extra gooey and chocolate-y. The only thing about adding more chocolate chips than it calls for, though, is that while it is warm, it will not set. It will fall apart! BUT – once it completely cools, it will set into the square or whatever shape you decided to cut it into. So that you know, adding more chocolate can cause it to fall apart and be a complete mess.

Baking Tips

  1. Don’t overmix once you add the dry ingredients; this keeps the brownies tender.
  2. Watch the baking time closely. For fudgy brownies, check a few minutes before the recommended baking time—you want the center set but soft.
  3. Cool completely before cutting if you want clean squares, though they’re irresistible warm from the oven!

How to Serve

  • Top with a sprinkle of sea salt to enhance the chocolate flavor.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat.
  • Package as gifts in a cute box or tin—these brownies travel well and always impress!

These brown butter chocolate chip brownies are the kind of dessert that makes every day feel special. Rich, flavorful, and irresistibly gooey, they’re perfect for sharing…if you can bear to part with them. I know my husband hates to share them.

    Ingredients Equipment Method

    Ingredients

    • 1 c unsalted butter
    • 1 c dutch-process cocoa powder
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 2 c brown sugar
    • 3 large eggs
    • 1 c all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 1/2 c semi-sweet chocolate chips (you could also use chopped chocolate as well as change the semi-sweet to dark)

    Equipment

    • 1 sauce pan
    • 1 9×9 dish
    • 1 spatula
    • 1 bowl

    Method

    1. Prepare everything you need. Preheat your oven to 350ºF. Grease all sides of your 9×9 pan.
    2. Start browning your butter in your saucepan on the stove top. It is best to go low and slow, so use medium-low heat to melt and brown the butter. You will want to take your spatula and scrape the sides of the saucepan every few seconds to prevent the sauce from burning onto the sides of the pan. Soon, the butter will begin to melt and foam. This may seem scary, but continue to stir or even move the pan to the side off the heat and stir until the foam falls a little. Continue to stir the butter, and soon it will start to smell of toffee. You will notice little bits at the bottom of your pan – those are milk solids that are separating of the butter. Those milk solids are what we are toasting for our browned butter. Once you see those milk solids turn into a golden brown color, it is time to remove your browned butter from the heat.
    3. Pour your browned butter into your bowl. Combine the cocoa and vanilla with your browned butter. Cream them together until there are no lumps or dry bits of cocoa powder remaining. (Cream together means to mix them well.)
    4. Add your brown sugar and eggs to the browned butter mixture. Beat these together until they are lighter in color and fluffy.
    5. Add the flour and salt to the mixture. Then mix together until there are no remaining bits of flour unmixed.
    6. Next, add the amount of chocolate chips you would like, whether that be according to the recipe or more!
    7. Lastly, pour the brownie mixture into your prepared 9×9 dish and bake. Depending on your oven, it could take shorter or longer to bake them. Baking them can take anywhere from 20-30 minutes. Start with 20 minutes and then check on them. Stick a toothpick through the middle and see how much batter comes out. What you are looking for is a nearly clean toothpick with set edges. You want just a little bit of moist (not wet) crumbs to come out on the toothpick. If it still looks like batter, leave them in for another 5 minutes and then test again.
